Tragically, many of these writers are good-looking but chose to work BEHIND the camera instead of acting. Now even that choice of avocation is endangered.

James Baldwin, Writer and Victim

James Baldwin is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery in Westchester County, New York. He was a personal friend of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King.

Baldwin wrote about civil rights, the 1960's, homosexuality, religion and many other sometimes controversial issues. He is generally considered underrated because he was an expatriate living in France for many years up until his deat h and because of his homosexuality. For example, he was criticized by Eldridge Cleaver ("Soul on Ice") within the black community and it very negatively impacted his image.

However, many great writers, including Toni Morrison, consider him to be very influential, and he remains a compassionate and thoughtful voice of the 1960's and American culture.

The 30ft high installation of a giant table and chair which nestles behind Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath has drawn considerable critical and public acclaim since it was officially unveiled on 22 June this year. Italian artist Giancarlo Neri considers his work The Writer to be a monument to the loneliness of writing and says he was inspired by the atmosphere and literary traditions of the Heath. The sculpture, which was first displayed in Rome, uses six tons of steel, 1,000 pounds of wood, 200 gallons of paint and several hundred nuts and bolts to hold it together.
