at first, american writers still considered themselves british writers and still wrote in the typical british styles
one of the first "true" american writers is considered washington iriving
you can see in the later american writings, such as irving's, that authors started writing for entertainment, aesthetic purposes, and not to deliver messages
previously, almost everything was didactic, but the american identity began to emerge and the unique american landscape and american values starting finding their ways into texts
the main strategy to not be considered british was to stop mimicking british writing and stop using the traditional british european landscape for the settings
